Comparing the Sonoma Diet with The  Atkins Diet
and The South Beach Diet.

Our Review:

The Sonoma diet has 3 phases (called "waves") --- and these are  kind of similar to the various phases of the Atkins Diet (often referred to as the Adkins Diet) and also The South Beach phases.

Phase 1 of the Sonoma Diet is called the "Induction" phase, and it seems to serve the same general intentions as phase 1 of the Atkins and South Beach programs (elimination of certain types of processed foods, sugars, and some other foods from the system).

Phase 1 of the Sonoma diet (the Induction phase) lasts for 10 days, and the purpose of this phase is to eliminate sugar-based carbs, processed foods, certain types of fats, and other types of foods such as some fruits.

This is similar to how the South Beach program uses it's first phase to eliminate sugar, fruit and processed foods.

The Atkins program has a similar type of "induction phase" which serves the same "general" purpose.

The Sonoma diet then moves on to its second phase (wave 2) which is used to re-introduce some types of foods back into the diet, similar to how the South Beach plan allso has a second phase which re-introduces certain types of carbs (such as fruits) back into the diet.

Similarly, the Atkins diet also has a phase where it brings back certain types of carbs (such as fruit) into the diet.

Finally, the Sonoma diet then has a third phase (wave 3) which is used when a dieter finally reaches their target weight and sets out to maintain that weight for the rest of his or her life.  This is the phase where the dieter is expected to transform the Sonoma diet a "lifestyle", and this phase allows wider food choices too.

Interestingly the Atkins diet also has a final phase which dieters use when they reach their target weight.

This is also similar to how the South Beach diet has a final phase which ultimately serves to turn the diet into a permanent lifestyle when the dieters reaches his or her goal.

So even though the foods in the Sonoma diet are very different - it still seems to maintain the same general principle" as both the Atkins and the South Beach diets.

I do not claim that Sonoma is the same as the  Atkins or South Beach plans (since there are some very major differences between them)........but  many of the same "underlying principles" appear to be similar, such as the various phases and what they are used for).

My opinion:  I do not recommend anyone to use the Sonoma Diet for the same reasons that I do not recommend using the Atkins or South Beach programs.

Such a diet is far too difficult to follow for the average dieter since the menu must eventually become a permanent lifestyle change, and it does severely  limit certain types of foods.
